The Den Theatre

German terrorist Hans Olo and his henchmen take the cast and audience hostage, and it is up to Bruce — with some help from the LAPD, FBI and Arnold Schwartzen-Schnitzel — to save everyone before time runs out. Packed with hysterical musical numbers, nonsensical fight sequences, explosions, machine guns, and more Christmas snow than Los Angeles ever gets, there is a reason Yippee Ki-Yay Merry Christmas has quickly become a Chicago holiday tradition.

“The Truth About Santa”: A Chicago Premierethings to do in chicago

The Buena at Pride Arts Center

4147 North Broadway

Chicago, IL 60613

Santa Claus is tired of the lies. Like the gods of old, he too has his mortal mistresses. This Christmas Eve he’ll bring Mary, his favorite earthly consort, and Luke and Freya, their illegitimate, semi-divine children, back to the North Pole compound to live with him — forever. Not surprisingly, Mrs. Claus resists. As Mary’s drunkard husband, George, and the singing elf-slaves Jo-Jo and Jim-Jim are drawn into the marital melee, all Hell —  literally — breaks loose. After nearly a decade in New York, Intrinsic Theatre Company brings “The Truth About Santa” (an apocalyptic holiday tale) to Chicago audiences for the first time.

A Dickens Carol: Real Carol Behind Classic “A Christmas Carol”

Madison Street Theatre

things to do in chicago1010 Madison Street

Oak Park, IL 60302

312-282-1750

Before Scrooge, author Charles Dickens had his own ghosts to contend with. “A Dickens Carol” uses real events to reimagine the story of Scrooge from Dickens’ point of view. With his marriage and finances in trouble in 1840s London, Dickens has become bitter toward life itself, a bit like the grouchy character he has yet to create. But on a cold Christmas eve, a horrible train crash plunges him into the icy Kent river. Stuck in a carriage slowly sinking into the water, three spirits lead Dickens on a journey through his past, present, and future. The journey transforms his life and inspires him to write his most celebrated work ever. The carol behind the carol, this all-new twist on a family ghost story at Oak Park’s Madison Street Theatre promises to melt the heart of the scroogiest Scrooge out there.

The second longest-running holiday play returns to Chicago. For 17 years, the American Blues Ensemble has treated Chicago audiences to a live 1940s-style radio broadcast. Once again, the incredible “It’s a Wonderful Life” cast assembles to recreate the entire town of Bedford Falls with Foley sound effects, an original score, and holiday carols. Critics call this “perfect Christmas theater” and “first-class holiday fare.” After each performance at Stage 773, the cast keeps the merry mood going by serving milk and cookies to the crowd.

things to do in chicago

Pride Arts Center: Broadway Stage

4139 N Broadway

Chicago, IL 60613

After Santa Claus retires, his wicked son begins a not-so-jolly reign as the new head of Christmas. The North Pole begins to crumble under his bigoted rule, and Barney the Elf is forced to leave his home for being different from the others. Soon he embarks on a fabulous journey of self-discovery (or is it elf-discovery?) that lands him in one of Chicago’s hottest drag bars. But can he truly leave Christmas behind for a new life in the big city? “Barney the Elf” brings musical numbers galore and plenty of queer holiday cheer to Chicago’s Pride Arts Center.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Hey Charles! I tried to make it as easy as I could to find the things to do in Chicago

  2. Phil Lancaster says:

Wow, what a knockout!I live in Australia and have visited the US a couple of times.New York (loved it), Washington DC, Virginia and San Francisco. One day, I’d like to do a road trip, driving across the US from the East to the West coast. A bit like driving from Sydney to Perth. But I’ve never even considered Chicago. Our views of Chicago are colored by movies and TV series about gang violence, the designation of “windy city” and the suspicion that it’s the model for Batman’s Gotham City. But your website has opened up a whole new vista of entertainment and sight-seeing.Chicago is now definitely on my bucket list.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Oh yeah Phil! There is so much to do in Chicago! You have to come. The negative things that have been shown about our great city has unfortunatelyover shadowed the beauty this City has to offer through entertainment and sightseeing! This is definitely a must do to have on your bucket list!

  3. Jamiro Hazel says:

This is an amazing page, there are so many events and places listed on this page. I have personally never been to Chicago. But seeing all these activities, it is really motivating me to go. It is a very intresting page and I enjoyed reading it. I hope you kee posting and updating the page.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Yes Jamiro! I will! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  4. sheilandc says:

wow this is so timely. My group of friends are planning a trip to Chicago in the summer. This will help us plan our trip well and be familiar with things to do and places to go. I have to save this article and share with everyone. I surely appreciate this. Thank you very much for sharing .

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Sheila glad I was able to help! Thanks for commenting.

  5. I must say that I am very glad that I stumbled upon this article as I have a friend of mine who lives there and he probably don’t know abut this great things. I would like to go in Chicago primarily on a New Year concert but I don’t have a time. I will share this info with my friend and I hope that he will enjoy.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Thanks for sharing with your friend Daniel!

  6. Woah! After living in Chicago for nearly 12 years now I’ve not heard of over half the places you have listed! I usually end up doing the Zoo Lights and seeing a comedy show or something and calling it a day! At most I might make it to the Music Box for their Christmas sing along special.

I had no idea that Mary’s Attic had a special show this time of year. I haven’t been there in years. Their Snowgirls show looks like a total riot. I think I’m going to have to check it out!

If you had to choose something for New Years Eve for someone that dislikes ‘all you can drink’ packages which would it be?

    1. Ladi Soul says:

I would probably go for the family cruise! Drinking is optional and this kind of event would fit the crieteria. Or I would choose one of the non-party events that does not include the all you can drink option.

  7. Well Im not from Chicago but right about now I wish I was.  If anyone there says there was nothing to do during the holidays I call I dont think so.

I see that most of this stuff is based around the holidays.  I was wondering if Chicago always has great things to do because it might be worth booking a vacation to.

I look forward to hearing your answer.

    Dale

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Dale absolutely! Chicago always has something going on in the Chicagoland area. Be sure to take that vacation to the windy city as soon as your free to.

  8. Strahinja says:

Hey there. I am so glad I bumped into your website. I am visting Chicago tomorrow and I want to spend some quality time with my friends. Your list is really awesome and thorough. You are more informative then some other official Chicago magazines and bloggers.

From what I read, the best thing for us is Annoyance Theatre and bar. At least for starters. I am visiting some old friends there and we are going to start from there and finish at some night club. I think we are going to have a nice time.

    Thank you once again.

    You were really helpful.

    Strahinja

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Hi Strahinja! You are welcome. I hope you and your friends find something to do and have an awesome time while you are out exploring the cities nightlife.
