Let me ask you this… Do you know what an Open Mic is?

For those of you who don’t know what an Open Mic is but is interested in finding out…

What Is An Open Mic?

An Open Mic is (derived from the expression “open microphone”), it is a live show at a coffeehousenightclubcomedy club, pub, community center, library or church.

Who Is An Open Mic For?

Audience members who are amateur performers or professionals who want to try out new material or plug an upcoming show are given the opportunity to perform onstage at these live shows.

You do not have to participate in performing. You can simply come and enjoy the show.

These shows provide an opportunity for emerging talent to gain experience performing to a live audience without having to go through the process of getting normal performing gigs, which is very difficult to do without experience or a demo recording.

Open mics provide an outlet for singer-songwriters, musicians, poets, spoken word artist, and comedians to perfect their craft!

How Can You Perform?

The performers sign up in advance for a time slot with the host, typically an experienced performer or the venue manager or owner. You can sign up online or at the venue.

What Kind Of Performing Arts Are Allowed?

These events are focused on performance arts like poetry and spoken word, music (often singer-songwriters who accompany themselves on guitar), and comedy. They also vary in genre.

Is There A Cover Charge?

Open mic nights may have no cover charge, or a very low cover charge, the venue may have a gratuity jar or “pass the bucket” for tips.

Venues that have no charge make revenue from selling alcoholic beverages and food. The performers are not typically paid.

When is Open Mic Nights Held?

Open mic events are most commonly held in the middle of the week or at the very end of the weekend when footfall through venues is low.

Now that you know what an Open Mic is, let me tell you about the open mic I host every Tuesday at the Touch of the Past located in Bellwood IL (a west suburb of Chicago).

The difference between any other ordinary Open Mic in the Chicagoland area is we provide a live band to accompany you while you perform or you are free to use a track if you have one. We do not provide tracks!

We also welcome all performing arts types. All open mics do not allow all performing arts types to perform. Some are tailored specifically to poets or comedians or singers.

We give the opportunity for any performing artist amateur or professional to take the stage and do their thing within the provided time slot.

What Is Live Band Open Mic?

chicago events and things to doLive Band Open Mic is a jam session (which is a relatively informal musical event, process, or activity where musicians, typically instrumentalists and singers, play improvised solos and vamp on tunes, songs and chord progressions.) and open mic all in one!

This is not karaoke! However, you are welcome to use your lyrics if you have them.

Every performer will have a set time they are allowed to perform and that depends on how many have signed up to perform for the evening.

I have heard open mics are a great way for comedians and musicians to practice performing their bits in front of an audience, as everyone has to start from somewhere!

Hearing that this is in Chicago is good to know, considering that while I am not in the area, I am in Wisconsin and have visited Chicago a few times.
