38. R. KELLY

Genre: R&B/Soul/Pop

CHICAGO MUSIC ARTISTI originally was not going to include him in this post, but R Kelly raises the troublesome question of whether we should celebrate his music when we know of his questionable relationships with young women.

Can we ever really separate the art from the artist? And should we? Ultimately, every listener must answer for themselves. Some people who hate him and his music have no idea R Kelly is behind the writing & production of so much music within American culture (R Kelly Credits).

To answer the question, in my opinion, the answer is yes, we should generally separate the art from the artist.

R&B producer/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter R. Kelly is one of 50 Chicago artists who has changed popular music. The original King of R&B, Robert Sylvester Kelly must be included in this list of Chicago artist you need to know.

The fact that he is a Chicago native and his talents as a singer, songwriter and arranger can’t be denied. Billboard names Kelly the No. 1 R&B artist of the last 25 years and he has outsold every artist on this list with nearly 60 million albums and continues to book concerts and receive big-name endorsements (some of which he has also lost).  He wrote No. 1 hits for some of the world’s biggest stars, including Michael Jackson and Celine Dion.

R-Kelly confessed he is in a full-blown and very personal struggle for his personal, artistic, and spiritual survival, by the sheer force of his commercial accomplishments — despite the decades of allegations of sexual misconduct allegations made against him, such as child sexual abuse and sex slavery, there are industry figures who have worked with Kelly and benefited and continues to profit from their partnership and collaborations with him. And that will not stop!

Time’s Up’s Women of Color, a powerful anti-sexual-harassment group that includes producer Shonda Rhimes, actress Rashida Jones, and director Ava DuVernay, in the wake of the Me Too movement, is calling on people to #MuteRKelly.

It doesn’t matter how much we demand everyone #MuteRKelly.  Kelly remains an active recording artist for RCA Records, a division of Sony, and continues to get booked for arena shows that are promoted by local radio stations. He is a music making money machine for them Period.

Is it a record company’s duty to deal with a performer’s offstage behavior, referencing stars such as Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry, who also consorted with young girls?

I feel like God is the judge. Man is not the judge. Whatever R Kelly (Robert) is doing, he’s got to answer for it, especially if he is continuously putting himself in these very compromising situations.

However, as a woman of color (WOC) within the community, R Kelly’s alleged behavior is not acceptable and should not and will not be tolerated by him or those like him any longer.

But I also feel, it should be said no other women of color or underaged girl should be involved sexually willingly or against her will, manipulated or controlled by R Kelly ever again, with all the allegations and evidence that is public knowledge at this point.

Lifetime released a trailer for its three-part documentary series “Surviving R. Kelly” it is scheduled to air on Jan. 3 at 9 p.m. EST.

Sandy Redd looks a bit like Tina Turner and that’s what makes me want to try it. I also love Opera as it calms me down, so the one that interests me also is Eva Ruwe. I just would like to know. Is there any way I can listen to a small part of the song so I can make a purchase decision? That would really help!

    Thank you!

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Hi Daniella! Absolutely! You can click on the amazon or apple icon under the artist name. Both platforms allow you to listen before you buy the entire song or album. Hope this helps! THanks for commenting.

  4. Cory Haasnoot says:

Great extensive list of R&B singers. I have always loved the Chicago music. Something about that town just inspires me. I’m a percussionist so I really enjoy the beat of the r&b music. In a way it is soothing and relaxing. I could listen to the music all day long. One of my favorites is B. Lilly. He is an awesome singer.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Hey Cory! Yes B. Lilly is dope! Glad i was able to help you find a new artist to listen too. Thanks for commenting!

  5. Hi – Thanks for sharing this great list. Plenty of new names on there for me to explore. I tend to prefer a more bluesy style of music, so Jordanna immediately stood out for me, particularly as she used to be in a riot grrrl band! House music is my guilty pleasure bringing back memories of the 80s, so I will be taking a listen to Frankie Parker. All the best, Diane

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Thanks Diane! Look out for my list of Chicago Blues artist you should know. Thanks for commenting!

  8. wow, what a nice collection of songs, I bet they will make a great playlist, It takes me back to the old school and brings me back to contemporary music. Shout out to R. kelly for remaining in the game for such a long time despite all the odds some of his fans still got his back.  Indeed chicago is filled with really talented song writers and musicians.

Your site is Top quality; Keep up the good work.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Thanks Zuchii for your kind words! Yes it is a great playlist! Chicago has a lovely variety of artist singers, songwriters, and musicians.

  9. Daniel Gonzales says:

    Hello Ladi Soul,

I was very impressed with this list of the 38 best R&B Soul Chicago Music artists! I had already heard of some the names like Jennifer Hudson and Sandy Redd, but I was not aware of so many other talented soulful artists in the Chicago area. I’ve never lived in chicago and only visited a few times.

I was also pretty shocked to see R. Kelly at the very end of the list. But I completely understand why with all of the crazy allegations and things that he’s done outside of his music career. He is a very controversial figure, similar to a Michael Jackson. One cannot deny how talented he is and that his music is above many others.

You seem to be an expert in this music scene with great descriptions of each article, including the venues that they have played at. This can be very helpful for the next time I am able to go to the Chicago area. I looked up some of the youtube videos of some of the artists on the list. I was pretty impressed with the quality of music and creativity.

Thanks for providing this wealth of information and helping to spread the influence of Chicago’s amazing R&B Soul community.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Glad you enjoyed the aricle Daniel! I had to think out my feelings about adding R. Kelly, as a woman and musiciologist I felt conversely conflicted. Thanks for commenting and hope to see you back again!

  10. Ladi Soul, what an awesome list you have put together for us!    I visited Chicago for the first time about 3 years ago.   I fell in love with the city and look forward to going back.    Your list of 38 R&B soul Chicago music artists has made me want to learn more about the Chicago music scene the next time that I am there.

Collectively, this is a very, very impressive group of talented individuals – in so many ways.   I thought it was cool to see that two Texans went to Chicago to become a part of the Chicago music scene.

It is very sad when people, that are extremely talented like R Kelly, have forever tarnished their reputations because of the way that they used and hurt females in their lives.

Sorry my comment has gotten so long.   Yet, I want to end it on a positive note.   Thanks for including the Sandy Redd video.  Not only does she have a powerful voice, she has a great stage presence.   I want to check out Eva Ruwes music next.

Thanks again for this introduction to this amazing set of Chicago music artists.   Hopefully, I will be able to see some perform next time I am in Chicago.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Sondra it really is sad when people, that are extrememely talented like R Kelly get themselves in these kinds of situations! However, Chicago has an amazing music scene!

  11. Hi,

Thanks for sharing this list. It’s not like other lists that just tell you their names. You actually went into detail about them which I thought was awesome because I didn’t have to go looking each one up separately. I already know I will listen to some of them based on your list.

    David

    1. Ladi Soul says:

You’re welcome David! Thanks for commenting!

  12. Sujandar Mahesan says:

My friend is really into R&B Soul Chicago Musics. I have never been a fan of it but my friend is really into these things. So I shared this article with my friend and he replied saying it is a real treat for him. He really likes the 38 picks that is published in this article. Thank you so much for these suggestions in this article.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

You are welcome Sujander! Thanks for commenting.

  13. Christopher says:

    Hi Ladi Soul:

Wow, I always knew that Chicago was a music-rich city but now I know it’s even more so than I thought!

I’ll have to admit that I didn’t know about these artists (except for Jennifer Hudson). I am kinda stuck in the 20th Century with soul, R&B artists like Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and the Temptations.

I must say that there’s nothing like listening to the smooth voice of a talented R&B singer – whether male or female.

I love to sing myself and feel that my vocal style sort of gravitates toward the R&B genre (at least sometimes). I also write songs and perform acoustic music at various venues around the Seattle area.

Thank you for letting us know about these artists!

    1. Ladi Soul says:

You are welcome Christopher! Its a pleasure to meet you. Keep making the Seattle music scene great!

  14. Strahinja says:

Hello and thank you for sharing this beautiful list with us. I really enjoyed checking it out. I am a big fan of R&B sould and I am really glad I’ve managed to find your website.

I also really appreciate sharing all the needed links like Youtube, Soundcloud, Instagram etc in order to reach the artists easier.

For now, my favorite is Christian JaLon. This is because I enjoy Jazz and especially the combination of Sould and Jazz. Thank you once again for this amazing list.

    Strahinja.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

My pleasure Strahinja! Glad you’ve enjoyed. I will appreciate your input!

  15. Hi. This is the first time I’ve heard of art musician in Chicago, and one of an article worth reading. Indeed, as you said, Chicago singers are very plentiful and creative people. These talents allowed them to make a lot of good songs, and some of the audience who supported them were feel very happy. I can’t wait to hear these songs, thanks for sharing.

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Tee Teng you are welcome! Thank you for your comments!

  16. Hello! Thanks for this comprehensive article. I had only heard of a few of these artists, so it is great that you are bringing attention to other who might not otherwise get it. I agree with you about R. Kelly. It does seem strange that someone can continue making tons of money and seemingly not learn from his past mistakes and yet nothing happens. But as you say, he will have to answer for it one day. At least there are 37 other artists to focus on!

    1. Ladi Soul says:

Absolutely Steve! Chicago is not short on great artist. Thanks for commenting.

  17. Cath Anon says:

I thought I’d better start reading through your list as I’m fully aware I’m stuck in a certain era with my music knowledge and appreciation.

Though I love music, I tend to play the same songs over and over and over; perhaps depriving myself of other soul-moving compositions out there.  So I was enormously grateful to see I know and love at least one recording artist on your list:  Jennifer Hudson!!!  I was a fan of hers right from the beginning and find her talent genuine.

Thank you for this list … you may just have dragged me from the doldrums of bygone years to enjoying today’s sounds 🙂

    1. Ladi Soul says:

You will defintely enjoy the sounds of these new artist. No doubt! Thanks for commenting.

I also like how you made a list of artist, there are some that I do know so that definitely tells me you have good taste.
I wouldn’t mind looking through the other artists musics and albums, maybe I’ll find something really good in there.

Thanks for sharing this post, I’m sure every R&B enthusiast would benefit from it.
